Courtney’s work is concerned with culture, identity and place. This year she has been designing and creating costumes and props leading up to ‘The Desolate North’ parade. The project explores regional pride in the North East of England and challenges the notion “it’s grim up North” in an ironic, joyful and tongue-in-cheek way. The carnival performance took place through the streets of Newcastle, featuring Newcastle Brown Ale ladies, dancing seahorses, Greggs-filled headdresses, magpie samba dancers, a Metro train conga line and more.
Courtney is also interested in storytelling through myth, symbolism and folk art. She creates dark, complex images through the medium of woodcut.
